How Bentonite Clay is Used

Shop Bentonite

People have used bentonite clay on skin and internally for a very long time, across nearly every continent. These are the applications it has traditionally been chosen for.*

On the skin

  • Clay masks for oily skin and congested pores
  • Poultices and compresses on irritated or itchy skin
  • Clay baths and full body wraps
  • Foot soaks

Internally

  • Traditional internal cleansing and detoxification
  • Digestive support and regularity
  • Mineral supplementation, particularly calcium

In practice

  • Professional spa treatments and body wraps
  • Cosmetic and skincare formulation
  • Clay dusting

What Makes Clay Work This Way

Bentonite carries a negative surface charge when hydrated. Positively charged particles are drawn to it, and because the clay is not digested, it carries what it binds out with it.*

Its swelling and water retention also explain why a poultice stays hydrated and active for 45 minutes or longer, and why sodium bentonite disperses through a bath instead of settling at the bottom.
